This book features the king of unlikable main characters, Tom Ripley. He's the kind of person I hope I never meet up with. He had a terrible childhood from which he emerged without a normal human conscience. In other words, he's a sociopath (at the very least.)

The original psychopath, Tom Ripley. Before diving into the book, I had vague memories of the film adaptation starring Matt Damon—those subtle, eerie movements and the slow transformation of Tom Ripley into a confident con man.

Tom Ripley travels to Italy to try to convince Dickie Greenleaf to return to America. Instead Tom becomes dangerously interested in Dickie. The first 80 or so pages of the book really dragged but then it definitely picked up. Ripley is a creepy character.
