This was an odd book - on one hand it was a interestoing story of life in Boston during 1764. The book included stslavery in Boston, the restricted options for women, the beginnings of America's reach of independence, and the importance of art and portaits in that time. But then it was also a tongue in cheek, bodice ripping, romance novel. The authors include a Pulitzer prize nominee and are respected academics so I am still wondering what they were going for. I've never really gotten into American history because it tends to be rendered rather dull and sermonizing (much like our Puritan forefathers), but this one's a hoot - playful, fun, and blessed of wit and soul. Fresh and well-paced, with solid research to boot. ...more
