I'll grab almost anything in English by an Algerian author and give it a try -- this short novel arrived in English via a particularly circuitous route. After fleeing Algeria in 1995 due to Islamist death threats, the author landed in Rome, where he worked at municipal housing for immigrants in Rome's Piazza Vittorio neighborhood.
