I was sick with worry over little David through the first third of this book. Coetzee's back to his old tricks--this felt much more like "Waiting for the Barbarians" than any of his other works I've read--in that it's more of a novel of ideas. Characters are on something of a blank backdrop, having philosophical and sociological discussions. I was engrossed by the second third of the book, and somewhat saddened by the obviousness of the metaphors in the last third. It was much more entertaining
