We are back to Three Pines in this next book in the series where one of Myrna's prior patients disappears after visiting Myrna in Three Pines. Besides the interesting murder mystery, this book brings many of the Suarte issues that have occurred throughout the series full circle. The pace of this book toward the latter half became very quick as I sat on the edge of my seat waiting to see the outcome as a result of the new revelations that I had received regarding a number of the characters.

Three Pines is a perfect place to spend winter holidays. The kids are playing hockey on the ice coached by Ruth and Rosa the Duck, the trees are lit, the bistro is serving up hot chocolate and cinnamon buns, and Myrna has some special books under Christmas tree by the fire in the bookstore/libraire. With two story threads, Penny ties up a lot of unresolved problems from previous books. A nice ending, but I wonder where she will go from here. As always her writing is excellent.

While the ending leaves the future fate of a key character in doubt, Penny does a lovely job here of bringing closure to the long-simmering thread that she's been unwinding through the last several entries in the series. Gamache is a terrific protagonist to follow through multiple books - his patience and fortitude are the bedrock, and Penny builds grand palaces upon it. ...more

This series justs gets better and better. The author masterfully creates a community populated by people you care about so you want to savor the journey, yet ratchets up the tension enough that you want to race through to get to the outcome. I've never read a series before that walks this line in such a perfect way. ...more

Defintely my favorite of the Gamache books so far. The murder mystery is secondary to the conclusion of a story arc that started several books ago. I stayed up way past my bedtime finishing it.
