I absolutely loved parts of this book but the second half can be summed up this way: *eye roll*

I love the setting of the wild British salt marsh (even if it is fictional). And I really like the main character, Ruth, and the police detective. The writing is clumsy at times, but not to the point that the pages stop turning.

Ruth Galloway is a forensic archaeologist who teaches at a Norfolk university. She lives in a remote area across from a salt marsh. DCI Nelson asks Ruth for help identifying bones found in the marsh that he believes might be those of a girl who was kidnapped ten years ago. A second girl also recently was kidnapped and Nelson is receiving letters similar to those he got with the first kidnapping. he asks Ruth's help with the letters too because they include archaeological information. A forensic archaeologist is called into identify some buried bones and ends up involved in a murder investigation. A good story with a few plausible suspects and a sub-plot which will no doubt stretch through the series.

I very much enjoyed this up until the final confrontation with the killer, mostly because I found the escape somewhat implausible given the physical condition of the participants - it just doesn't make sense medically given what was revealed about their history. I do really appreciate Griffiths's scene-setting and I like Ruth as a character, but the ending was a real miss. ...more
