This novel quickly became unputdownable for me. I don't know how closely it adheres to the actual historical record, but for me, someone living on the other side of the country, it was an interesting and unusual perspective on the Civil War. A girl in a wealthy family, whose father owned slaves as household servants, became very attached to them and was convinced they should be freed.
