Ugh. I read this book in grade school, and it is just as bad as I remembered. I was really annoyed by Johnny Tremain and all the other revolutionaries. The story was really slow and just about a lot of white people glorifying war and patriotism. I get that this is what the Revolutionary War was about, but I don't think the reader ever really understood why the war was happening or was given opportunities to develop empathy for the oppressed colonists. I remember reading this book in grade school and enjoying it very much. First, because it was one of the early books I read of that size as a child, and second, because it provided a historical account of the makings of America in an interesting and fun way.
