What Members Thought

I am giving this 5 stars, not because it's the best thing I've ever read, but because at 11 or 12, it was the first novel that I couldn't put down. I spent a whole sunny day on my grandmother's couch and read the book in one sitting. I doubt that I even stopped for a glass of water. So it's a special book to me. I haven't ever gone back to reread it, but I have very fond memories.

There should be more YA novels like this one. There are multiple problems to deal with in the life of Charlie whose learning skills are limited, but the author doesn't overemphasize. He expects his readers to do their own interpretation although it is clear we should be routing for Charlie.

I see now why this one is frequently tapped for English class, as it's tailor-made for discussion and essays. It's definitely interesting and leaves you with some big ideas to ponder.
