I haven't read Pakistani author Hamid's first two novels (Moth Smoke and The Reluctant Fundamentalist), but after reading this, I'm very inclined to seek them out. Here, he makes three and a half interesting choices in the telling of a straightforward rags-to-riches story, all of which succeed in the service of the story he's telling about life in modern "Rising Asia."

My third Mohsin Hamid book. I'm giving it a 3-1/2 stars in my Reading Log. I liked the narrator's voice overall, very chatty and witty. Quite a bit tongue-in-cheek, with a good dose of cynicism, the narrator outlays the challenges and difficulties of a fictitious person in a fictitious rapidly expanding Asian city (in South Asia) who is attempting to get ahead in life. Mohsin Hamid tracks the path of a poor boy who works his way up society to become a wealthy businessman through the form of a cheeky self-help book.We flutter across key points in the protagonist’s life that are demonstrations of the “lessons” derived from his ascent, whether it’s getting an education, greasing the wheels of bureaucracy, bending a few laws (like everyone else), expanding his business, and becoming the industry leader that the others are chasing.
