No one from Three Pines makes an appearance in this book, which takes place in a Gilbertine monastery. I really enjoyed Penny's take on the Gregorian Chants that were very popular in the late 1990s to the point where they led to murder in her story. A book that more than lives up to its title - the monastery setting is superb, the monks within richly rendered, and an absolute stunner of a back half as the relationship between Gamache and his right-hand man Jean-Guy Beauvoir faces its toughest test. Inspector Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvior are charged with investigating a murder in a monastery of two dozen monks that have taken a vow of silence. Their reason for being is singing Gregorian chants. How Penny makes such a unlikely scenario into a tight well though out mystery is a tribute to her talent.

Meh. The only interesting thing in the book is the Jean-Guy stuff, but even that was hard to listen to because he was such a dick most of the time.
