Why is it even okay to use Jesus' name as a swear word?
I liked much of this book but could not get past the offensiveness of using the name of Jesus in such a derogatory way. Would it be okay to use the name of Yahweh or Allah in such a fashion? I don't care if some people do talk that way in real life, it was insulting to have the _protagonists_ in the story speak in this way. To me, it's like an author having her hero or heroine use the n-word as a totally acceptable behavior. Disappointed. ...more

This is an adorable teen love story between Eleanor and Park, two quirky high school misfits. Oh how my teenage heart of yesteryear swooned for these two! It could have been my high school fantasy love story, had I had better taste in boys.
BUT like many readers, I found a fair amount of the book heavy with racial stereotypes. The ones that especially bugged me were Park's mom, and DeNice and Beebi; outside of the stereotypes of a Korean woman "saved" by a masculine white soldier, and the classi ...more

A 4.5 star rating.
Charming, dramatic, and wonderfully engaging YA romance of two awkward high school misfits, set in the mid 80's Nebraska. As relevant for today's teenagers as for those of us who spent high school swooning over cute boys with new wave t-shirts and The Smiths playing on their Walkman. Highly recommended (as is Rainbow Rowell's blog, featuring the "playlists" of the novel). ...more

This is an excellent story about the redemptive power of friendship (and some romance) for a teen girl who with her sibliongs, lives in a horribly abusive situation with a mom who is clueless and a stepfather who is definitely evil. When Eleanor tentatively makes friends with Park, she doesn't know that he will eventually save her life. Definitely a good read!

It's insane how much I related to Eleanor, I never have related towards a character as much I related to her. This was my second Rainbow Rowell book and I'm learning she can do no wrong. Highly recommend!
