Penny's mysteries often get described as cozies, and while she uses many of the cozy conventions I don't really see them that way - her emotional insight, particularly into our darker human impulses, is much too deep to fit the cozy label. There's nothing flimsy and surface here - the layers are carefully crafted and suffused with meaning in a way that only the very best mystery writers manage. Can’t decide if this is a full 4 stars. Maybe a 3.5
The characters in these stories are always so unlikeable yet somehow worthy of redemption. And I really thought I had solved the whodunit. I was close but wrong. Another enjoyable book in the series.

So good! The Gamache mysteries just get better and better! I think this may be my favorite yet!
