At first, I wasn't a fan of the narrator's voice, but then I realized that she captured the gossipy, chick lit nature of this book. I also liked being awakened by her singing Silent Night.
I agree with the reviewer who said that we were misled by the blurb, because Bernadette disappeared 2/3rds into the book and there was no mystery as to why. ...more

I don’t even know if this is 2 stars or 2.5 stars or 3. The beginning was hard rowing, the middle was better, and the end was a letdown. The whole book felt like way too much effort. But there were parts I enjoyed hence the 2.5 stars. Lol

I read this book the week after I returned from an Antarctica cruise, because I saw it in a bookshop in Port Lockroy with a sign saying "THIS BOOK MENTIONS PORT LOCKROY". It tickled me immensely everytime I knew a reference. I kept nudging my husband every 2 hours showing how Maria Semple IS IN MY HEAD. If this is satire, I love it.
