Quite possibly one of the worst works of fiction I've ever read. The premise was fascinating. Main character works at a homeless shelter after recovering from a brutal attack. Character becomes obsessed with a box of photos left behind by a deceased client of the shelter. Action, intrigue, mystery and suspense to follow.

Solid beach read that opens with a heart racing attack of a girl who is biking through a remote, wooded area in Vermont. The book then tells the how the girl copes with the traumatic attack while working at a homeless shelter post-college graduation. She meets a homeless man whom she believes to be the descendant of Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Yes, those same Buchanans who were the subject of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Pretty good surprise ending but it really annoyed me that there were photos of famous people from the 50's and 60's printed through the book but they never tell you who they are.. mom you'll have to read it and tell me!

I loved the ending but it was just way too painful to get there. I've put down antoher of Bohjalian's books and had a hard time sticking to this one too.

I liked the first three fourths of this book - I thought it was clever and since I had read Gatsby in the past year, I enjoyed how the author weaved In all the characters. I enjoyed readng about life in Burlington VT and the characters were pleasant.
But the last fourth was downright obnoxious. When I realized where it was going, it just fell apart for me. And the jail scene was one of the worst scenes I have read in a long time. Don't think I would recommend it. ...more
