Haven't seen the movie, but it was easy for me to imagine James Earl a Jones in the main role of Troy Maxson. It is a short play, but not a quick read with the many issues raised. It revealed a descriptive picture of the challenges of that time and for this family and man in particular. Recommend. ...more

Wonderful play, certainly deserving of all of the accolades it’s received: Pulitzer, Tony and so many more. Knowing that James Earl Jones originated the role had me picturing him and hearing his voice throughout. #ReadHarder2020 #challenge #6

Since I had recently read Of Mice and Men which is another dark bit of realism, my first thought was "Wilson does well what Steinbeck tried to do." Wilson inserts you into a world with flawed characters in difficult circumstances. There is no villain in the story just imperfect heroes in a harsh world. A worthy read. ...more
