In spite of myself, I ended up really liking this book. It wasn't the light beach read I thought it'd be. And I spent the first 200+ pages really disliking many of Dolores' decisions/indecision, but I suppose being connected enough to be disappointed is part of what makes it a well-written character.

Not to be obnoxious, but...I always thought of this book, not having read it, as sort of chick-lit which I sometimes like and sometimes don't like. Maybe it was just the mood I was in a few weekends ago, but I picked this up at a church book sale for 50 cents and read it straight through. I thought it was really compelling and interesting and emotionally wrenching. And you know I love crying...:)

Verification of the fact that I should stay away from chick lit. I'm finding myself increasingly irritated by the "atrocious childhood" genre of fiction -- ever since Angela's Ashes (or maybe long before that) this has become a popular story arc. Wacky character perseveres endearingly despite all odds. Blech!

Like so many others have said, I just can't believe that this man wrote so powerfully and convincingly in the voice of an angst-ridden female. Dolores is alternatingly comical, pitiable, unlikeable and lovable. Very interesting read.
