What Members Thought

Mark Helprin writes very well, and his imagery is beautiful, even so the story itself failed to capture me. Another reviewer mentioned that, saying that he is a good writer, but not a very good story teller. It was a bit like reading a clinical case for me, I was paying attention, but in a very distanced kind of way. His attempt at magical realism is alright, but nothing like some of the best examples of that genre -- e.g. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Garcia Marquez, or Salman Rushdie Midnig
