I may come back to this later to expand on my review. It's a library book, and I have returned it, so I'm reviewing via memory and not quoted examples (which I think important given the high quality of the writing). Anyway, The Towers of Trebizond was published in 1956, two years before Rose Macauly's death. It's an unusual book that blends fiction, travel writing, and a good dose of theology. A classic humorous travel book but with dark undertones. It was immensely popular when it came out in 1956 and while some of the historical context has changed, the deeper undertones of religious faith and doubt and practical morality are always current. Further, anyone with some knowledge of the history of the region, or willing to learn, will be caught up in the deeply tragic history of Trebizond (now Trabzon) and its beauty.
