Ugh this was SO GOOD.
This is a fairly long book -- 500 pages of small text and narrow margins -- and it takes some time; all the same, I felt like I was blowing through it. Jones is an adept writer, and is quite good at making the history truly come alive. This is clearly well-researched, it's cohesive, and it is able to both wrap you in the moment you're reading, and yet also pull you back to see the long-term consequences of that moment.
