Engaging, well written story, great character development. Fascinating, insightful look at how we may perceive a person, several persons in this case, initially and then over time how those perceptions change as we really get to know them. Also, about love, between friends, lovers, parents, and forgiveness. He did a fabulous job capturing how choices catch up to a person later, for the good and perhaps not so good, although as a younger person their import was not fully considered/known. I enjoy ...more

My second Amor Towles book, after A Gentleman in Moscow. This one was an audiobook that had an excellent narrator. Borrowed from the library. Ah, the writing! The style! What prose! What an all-around pleasure! Towles knows how to weave a great story, with fully fleshed-out characters, and to draw the reader in & keep them engaged. Katey Kontent and her friend Evey are out stretching their money on New Years Eve when they run into Tinker Grey who is an investment banker. The three become friends then an event occurs that changes all three lives. The book covers Katey's life throughout the year of 1938. Towles does a good job evoking New York City in 1938.
