This one gets off to a very abrupt start, and the narrative flow never quite smooths out from that point forward. While I've generally appreciated Alexander's sensitive handling of Emily's personal struggles in the last few entries, this one introduces a cliff-hanger development that I find to be a little too pat. I understand the impulse to move that plot ball forward, but the just-one-more twist seems unnecessary and forced.

I'm not reading this series in order so this one filled in some gaps in the ongoing story of Lady Emily as well as an interesting look at Venice during the Victorian era.

This mystery goes all over the place and has a wham-bang shocking ending.
