Cinder the cyborg has low self-esteem, though she's a very talented mechanic. Her mechanical skills catch the eye of the crown prince, Kai, whose long time companion android needs a repair job. That's such a blessing for Cinder, to meet the handsome prince, but all is not well in New Beijing where this story takes place. There's a deadly plague going around, and it tragically touches Cinder's life that very day.

This is light read in a great setting. I love fairy tale retellings and this one is really special. It is the future! Cyborgs! Androids! What a extraordinary idea! Marissa Meyer tells her story very logical - the evil behavior from Cinder's stepmother and stepsister. Her status as someone who's not "worth" living the same life as the "normal" people. This is a very good book that I would not have picked up but for my niece telling me that I 'just had' to read it! In fact, the story is refreshingly different and although there are elements of the original, they have been reworked into a fascinating tale. Kudos to the author for something new and different. ...more

This book was a pleasant surprise. It is really not the kind of book I would usually choose, but it was well written and I really liked the twist on Cinderella plot, the setting was intriguing and the characters well developed. Having said that, I would have given it an extra star if not for the abrupt end. It left a bit too much unresolved for me.

I think it was bold to do what this author did and I believe she pulled it off. I found it interesting from the beginning and it had some nice twists and turns. I think it was a good first book from this author and I would recommend it for someone wanting a fun read.
