Excellent book! Fast-paced and action-packed. If you liked Hunger Games then this is definitely a new series for you too. Has its similarities to Hunger Games (main character is also a girl with special abilities, dystopian future, world divided up into sections, etc) but it also has its own interesting spin on the dystopian genre. I couldn't put this book down and I'm looking forward to reading the next one. ...more

COMMENTS: I tend to stay away from dystopian novels -- why must the future always be portrayed as bleak, depressing, full of fear. I would prefer to read of future where we have moved forward, our intuition and insights have led to more fulfilling and happier lives… I think there could be still be conflict needing a resolution …ergo providing a storyline…nevertheless, I chose to read Divergent and I did like it. I was by no means wowed but liked it enough to want to read on in this series. It is sometime in the future in what was once known as Chicago. The world is now divided into 5 factions: Candor (honesty), Abnegation (humility), Dauntless (courage), Amity (serenity) and Erudite (reasoning power/intelligence). In this society you must devote yourself to only one faction. At age 16 you must make the choice. You can choose another faction from what you were brought up in but it is very clear that your allegiance must be a total 100% dedication to one faction. Beatrice has desires/inclinations towards more than one faction & is considered Divergent. This must be hidden since it is forbidden. Initially, the idea of the factions was to focus on the facet of strength you had and work together w/ the other factions towards unity, however, there was divisiveness and certain factions were sure they were superior to others and wanted to control and annihilate the others -- war. As divergent, Beatrice/Tris had abilities that could transcend the one-faction mind and deter the annihilation of her faction.
