4.5 stars. Yes, there are some dark themes here, ranging from elder abuse and identity theft to a bit of pedophilia. Thankfully, because it's Kinsey, there is also plenty of well-placed comic relief. I'd resisted reading this one for years, but I'm glad I finally pressed through, as I found this one of the best in the series so far.

By the way, if you're looking for a fast-paced mystery series in which the PI is someone most any reader can identify with, slightly more than slightly badass who pr

Times are a bit slow in the PI business for Kinsey Millhone due to the Christmas season but she is still busy being a process server and helping investigate a suspicious traffic accident. Then her elderly neighbor takes a fall and needs in home medical care and sociopath Solana Rojas is hired. Kinsey soon becomes suspicious of Solana and she and her landlord Henry along with neighbor Gus are in danger. I liked that Grafton changed things up and told some chapters from Solana’s POV.

SERIES/STAND ALONE: #20 Kinsey Millhone
TIME/PLACE: 1987/California

FIRST LINES: I don't want to think about the predators in this world.

COMMENTS: library book. Kinsey has a new ride, her bug was totaled in the last book & she's now in a mustang. It's still 1987 but the issues are very current: identity theft, elder abuse. When her neighbor Gus hurts his sho

I've read A through S, and I plan to continue right through to Z. At some point these books started to become depressing, as if perhaps the author is sorry she's locked into writing this series. The protagonist's life seems to be going downhill, and being trapped in the 80s doesn't really work for me. The "S" book was more of a true-crime than a mystery novel, and "T" didn't really involve much of a mystery at all. The villain and her goals were made clear from the first chapter, the only questi ...more

Kinsey gets outfoxed by a very clever elder care provider. Grafton shows how easy it is to get duped even if you know most of the tricks of the trade.

I really liked the shifting perspective between Kinsey and Solana. A very timely topic and great new mystery.
