Moose Flanagan's family moves to Alcatraz from Santa Monica, California. Moose's father is employed as a guard and electrician at the prison. The family has moved so Moose's sister Natalie, who has autism though this is not a known disease in the 1930's, can attend a special school to help her become more "normal". The setting of Alcatraz and the character of Natalie are well developed. Otherwise I found most of the characters to be one dimensional and not well developed. ...more

I love this book. It captured the difficulty of figuring out the autistic syndrome when it hasn't been acknowledge yet. The setting is pretty mesmerizing too, Alcatraz island in 1935. There are some sequels that I'd definitely check out! ...more
