Penny is an incredibly gifted author (as her back-to-back-to-back Anthony Awards attest), and I adore this series - she allows her characters to be serious and introspective but have that be a natural extension of her style rather than forced importance. In this one especially, seeing how the different characters are grappling with deeply personal emotional crises lifts the story high above the usual cozy fare. I loved this installment of the Gamache series! Happy to be back in Three Pines and I loved the art world tie-in. So great seeing Clara come into her own. This is the 7th in the series and honestly, it just gets better and better! Even though there may be a bit of a formula, they are so good, I don’t care! And I want a happy ending for Beauvoir so badly! I need to get my hands on the next one.

As usual Penny does an excellent job with her characters making them into real people who have their own flaws and virtues. Gamache and Beauvior are still battling demons from Gamache's plan gone wrong. Some of Three Pines more memorable residents including my favorite poet Ruth get a little mre action in this one.
