I'm not sure what the author was trying to do when telling this story but unfortunately, it just didn't resonate with me. What is it supposed to be? A fictional narrative? It reads like a memoir most of the time, and then slam poetry the rest of the time.

I had not been aware of the apparent hype for The Yellow Birds before picking it up. What’s more, I'm generally not interested in contemporary war novels. Most of these novels only disappoint anyway. Can anything compete with Catch-22 and The Things They Carried? And yet I happened to glance at one review of The Yellow Birds and saw a quote that caught my eye.
