This amazing book was an assigned reading back when I was working on my Master's Degree and finishing my Teaching Credential.
It is a stunning, intelligent, wonderful, heartbreaking, eye-opening, and memorable story of James McBride's life. I highly recommend it.

What a wonderfully written, touching tribute to a mother's love and struggles and dedication. And, that's not even counting the social trials and tribulations. I really liked this book and by the end was wishing that I knew this family and especially Ms. Ruth. She sounds like one helluva woman.

Excellent! -- A black man's tribute to his white mother. As an adult James discovers Ruth's background as a Jewish woman, growing up in the South. She never talked of her past, not as denial but more... to instruct her 12 children to learn & have faith. Most (all?) went to college.
