I think this may be my second favorite Lord Peter Wimsey book. The story is compelling, the motive is interesting and the way he gets to the solution is great. Sayers writing is full o little gems. Some of her sentences are absolutely striking. I adore the music of her prose. I just wish there had been more Lord Peter action, especially in his interaction with Harriet Vane. The book only improves upon additional readings.

I enjoyed my first shot of Sayers and Lord Peter. It is very period, very London, very fine writing. I am not a big mystery follower, but do like a strong mystery story that has the strength to cross genres. I know Sayers has many fans who just love her smart approach and classic style, so this is up my alley. I liked the characters, of course was curious about Harriet Vane's introduction into the story, and found an unexpected pleasure in The Cattery.

I am so glad to have another series to place

I've treasured all the Sayers mysteries time and again over the years. Yes, they're dated and veddy veddy English, and yes, Lord Peter can be a twit, but they're still marvelous.

I recall being secretly in love with Bunter. Who wouldn't want a Bunter, I ask you?

Harriet Vane got on my nerves a bit, but I put up with her for Peter's sake.

Above all it's

Definitely my favorite of the Wimseys I've read so far, but I have to confess something. I just.....don't like Wimsey all that much. He's entertaining on the page, but I feel like if he were a real person I would find him completely exhausting. Maybe it's a product of the fact that Sayers clearly was half in love with this character herself and thus sets him up to be the paragon of a certain type of adolescent rescue fantasy that happens to be a total pet peeve of mine as an adult. So I guess wh ...more
