This was a can’t-put-down thriller set in Ohio and #1 in a series featuring a strong and compelling female police captain. Kate Burkholder is a young woman, raised by Amish parents, who left the Amish community following a horrific crime.

Crimer thriller set in small town Ohio featuring an ex-Amish Chief of Police. She has a dark secret in her past which threatens her career and the case she's investigating. A really clever plot, not too gruesome and the reader is given the chance to solve the crime with a few clues given along the way.

Kate Burkholder is sheriff in Painter’s Mill, Ohio. The body of a murdered woman is found by one of her deputies and it looks like the Slaughterhouse Killer is back after 17 years. This brings back a horrible event from Kate’s past when she was a child living with her Amish family. An engaging read and I didn’t guess the killer until close to the end.
