Kinsey Millhone is hired by Daisy Sullivan to find out what happened to her mother Violet who disappeared 34 years ago, in 1953. The book alternates between Kinsey's investigation and chapters told from the POV of people who knew Violet and their interactions with her before her disappearance. I enjoyed the switching back and forth part of the book and the changes in time from the 1950's to the 1980's. I do feel that the end was a bit rushed and would have liked to know more what happened to the

It is amazing how seamlessly Grafton integrates the story taking place in 1953 and the one occurring in 1987. Having lied through both these time periods it is nice to be reminded about technology, prices and common social practices in those times. She does a superb job of describing teenage angst in 1953, dramatic, but so different from the teenagers of today. All this against resolving what turns out to be a cold case murder.

I've read all Sue Grafton's mysteries and found some better than others - but this is possibly the strongest of the lot, partly because it is a lot more than just a mystery. Much of it is set in the past and seen through the eyes of various characters. It makes me wonder whether she will write other types of novel when she gets to the end of the alphabet.
