In my library's reading club, they suggest you read a book in a genre that is outside of your comfort zone, and this book is fulfilling that. (Then I get to watch the movie, fulfilling another category!)
I expected it to be hopelessly sappy and maudlin, and boy is it ever! The writing style is annoying, he's trying so hard to paint a picture of this down-home earthy poet guy. I cried three times...I loved it. Very sad in the end, though..
Perhaps if I had read this before I heard all the hype I would have liked it more. It's not that I disliked the book, but I don't put it with my favorites.
