This is one of the most powerful novels I have read this year. I became interested in Lehane through his Kenzie/Gennaro mysteries, which are great. This book, however, is really special. It has all the makings of a classic Greek tragedy, but set in a blue-collar neighborhood of Boston.

I saw the movie version many years ago, but the book holds up better largely because you can skip Sean Penn's scene-chewing. The story is haunting, and I'm fascinated by how Lehane explores the impact of past events trickling down through the years and how we decide what's truly important in our lives. Well worth the accolades it's received over the years.

This book was riveting, and the description of the town and the characters was very well done. Eastwood really did the book justice with the movie.
