In truth, this was not a fast-paced read. It's a more detailed and more masculine version of Enid Blyton's The Secret Island, which I am extremely fond of and own - there is a lot of nautical information, all the children call each other 'captain' or
'able-seaman' or 'first mate', and there is an ever-present territorial motif, dividing the children/seamen from the 'natives' (their mother and neighbours near their holiday home) and 'pirates'.

Somehow I missed out on reading this as a child but I enjoyed it now!

I liked this book because
-It was like looking at the world from an imaginative kid's point of view.
-Yet it was realistic- grown ups and parents were a real part of their world.
-There were lots of descriptions about survival in the wild and camping and communing with nature (eg meal ideas, packing lists) which I happen to have gotten into the last year.
-I learnt some terminology about sailing and boating ...more
