I enjoyed this even more than Wolf Hall. There is quite a bit of suspense and the pace is great!

Mantel is one of the best writers I've come across in years. Just as with Wolf Hall, the prose here is delectable; the cadence, the rhythm, the rise and fall of her sentences is just fantastic. I would read 1940s agricultural reports if they were written in Mantel's prose.

The history, of course, is relatively well-known. But the imagination of Cromwell's life and his interior landscape is peculiar to Mantel, and it's compelling. In this volume we see Cromwell's darker side: revenge, power, some
