The ending was a little too brutal for me, but this was a terrific book. The writing was thoughtful and beautiful at times, and I really like the main character, Anna Pigeon, who works as a law enforcement ranger in Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Apparently every book in the series takes place in one of the US national parks. Nevada Barr calls the landscape, including flora and fauna, to mind beautifully and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. People who don't like animals and don't re

I'd maybe go with 2.5 stars if I could. I'd always heard such good things about Nevada Barr's books, especially the Anna Pigeon series. I think this book and series has potential and I can't really articulate why it fell flat for me. Not as good as Hunting Season, which is later in the series, but that's to be expected. Nevada Barr has improved. The characters in this book were easily confused as they weren't as well developed as in Hunting Season, but this book was a nice introduction to Anna Pigeon, and it surprised me to see how much she's developed/grown in the 8 books of the series between the two I've read. I'll definitely keep going with this series. ...more

I find the villains to be a bit over the top in this one, but Barr does well with her Texas setting and conveying not only the risks and challenges of merely existing in extreme environments but also how best to preserve them in a balanced way.

I tried but I couldn't finish this book, it just did not hold my interest. I may try it again someday, but for now, I've had enough of this drag.
