This is a rich combination of erudition and the personal, told in sparkling prose. It's almost too much, but that's my problem. The main problems with the book are two revisions that marry poorly with the original text; I'd have preferred leaving it as a snapshot of Venice ca. 1960 - which is all that would excuse some unfortunate racial references that are unacceptable at the date of later revisions.
