Wow. Rereading this movie tie-in ebook 11 years later. Almost like reading fanfiction now that I can visualize CATE BLANCHETT and ROONEY MARA as the perfect Carol and Therese. A decade ago I could not have appreciated the opening chapter, understood Therese's bleak, hopeless feeling working in the department store, looking around at the people, mainly women, who have been there for 15, or 25 years, who feel they must humble-brag a little to explain themselves re: how they ended up at the job for ...more

I read this book long ago, 2005, that I'd almost forgotten about it, until the movie Carol came out a couple years ago (with Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett). I loved the movie too because the actors were simply amazing, well-cast, and it was stunning. However, as pretty typical, I loved the novel even more and wish I would have kept my copy so I could reread it. And it was a hardback darn it! Highsmith gives a slightly different slant to Lesbian/Gay literature than what is most popular today.

Read this some years ago. I just remember appreciating the tension from the first half, but my attention began to drift for the second half--very similar to how I read Lolita.

This starts off so SLOW. I kept waiting for it to grab me like all the other books I’ve read by Highsmith have grabbed me. I had such a hard time caring about any of the characters; I had no idea why Therese was so obsessed with Carol - Carol seemed like a snide jerk. Highsmith, of course, is known for writing unlikeable characters, but they usually have a charisma that keeps me engaged. Carol felt very flat.
