This is a very dense book! The main theme itself is very interesting - I've just found out that there were actually black families who owned the black slaves in America before the Civil War. But the plot is just too much. There are too many interesting characters and subplots that the author wanted to cover - with a quite exhausting results. I found it difficult for me to remember most of the character's names and background stories. I just wish the author filtered the subplots a bit, so that we ...more

I love the way this book gives the stories of the many characters, both in the past and also tidbits into their futures. It was a very engaging way to read about this unfortunate stage in US history.
