I have mixed feelings about this book, and would rate different parts anywhere from 1 star to 5 stars, hence my 3 star rating.
I had trouble getting into the book. I started 2 or 3 times before I finally made it through part 1. Probably b/c I didn't much like Reverend Stephen Drew, and this was long before the allegations began in part 2. Wow! This was sooo slow...
There's some promise behind Bohjalian's premise, but ultimately this one falls flat as it spends far too long building to a terribly obvious conclusion. I kind of wish he'd just dropped the suspense element and told the story straight, since that's by far the weakest part of this outing.

Family violence, alcohol, religious crisis, friendship, guilt, compassion are some of the themes touched in this novel by Bohjalian. Enjoyable reading but the characters may lack certain authenticity.
I would have given this 3 stars except for the ending...not to give it away but it was good.
