I really enjoyed this book. It's about children who grow up in a very different type of abusive household. This book is not about physical child abuse; it's about pure neglect, and how the children each turned out based upon this upbringing. It's a sad story, but quite uplifitng and hopeful, as well. The book opens with our narrator, Jeannette, on her way to a New York City function, when her cab stops beside a homeless women rooting through the trash. Upon closer scrutiny, Jeannette realizes that homeless woman is, in fact, her mother. And so begins one of the most amazing books I’ve read in recent memory. The blurb on the back of the jacket does it an enormous disservice, painting it as a bleak autobiographical account of woman growing up in an abusive family. It’s actually quite touching, ...more

Generally I save five stars for books I want to read again and this one was so terrifying and then so triumphant, it will be one I want to reread in a few years. As this childhood memoir progresses for the author and her siblings, their teenage escapes reminded me of another 2005 memoir about teens taking matters into their own hands, Afschineh Latifi's Even After All This Time: A Story of Love, Revolution, and Leaving Iran.
