Beautifully written book about nothing much. A story has to be deeper for me to be interested in people who have pots of money to throw at every issue and I really, really didn't like that one of the woman characters, the only one with any real agency, was somehow to blame for everything. Three stars for the writing; otherwise, ugh.

Beautiful writing. Such a quiet story about two marriages and true friendship but I just wanted to live in this book. I read it as slowly as possible, never wanting it to end.
In the end, I didn't love the way it resolved. My worldview is different. The last section is true to life but so sad. ...more

This novel was written some time ago before the electronic explosion. It takes place around the time of WWII, and deals with two families in academia. They are friends though clearly from different economic backgrounds. It is a novel of family dynamics in a much gentler time than today. Refreshing in a good sense.
