Allen's books are nice break from the heavier reads to which I tend to be drawn. Once again, she weaves a sweet tale about two females, one a 16 year old who just arrives in town, and the other, a 36 year old who is counting the days until she leaves town. In the mix, is a rich family's secret about why they don't leave the house at night. Allen usually interweaves magic as part of her story, in a fun way, but the big secret was off the mark for me in this one.

Definitely a fluff piece, but I consistently enjoy the way that Allen sets up her conflicts and resolves them - it has a level of sweetness tempered by practicality that makes for a nice real-world counterbalance to the magical realism she weaves in. And plus, cake!

No... just no.
I contemplated adding a star for the marvellous cakes that appear in this book, but as more handsome Southern gentlemen appeared on the scene and a new character pops up in the final chapter, I thought... no. Too much telling for me.
