Great book that Bissinger wrote while embedded with the 1988 Permian Panthers and living for a year with his family in Odessa, Texas. Bissinger's book not only focuses on the high school football team's quest to win state, but he also provides an understanding of the people who make up the town, its history, and their views on everything from politics to race. After Stupid Fast, I simply had to finish FNL (I like continuity in themes).
There are parts of this book that are very good. More a sociological/anthropological study of a small town in Texas than anything else, FNL (the book) captures the town's dependence on football as spiritual sustenance and the politics of sports in high school education very well. Bissinger also follows the brief careers of a few of the football players (much like we do in the really good TV series), highlighting the incr ...more
