Joe Leaphorn is investigating the death of a young man found suffocated by sand. Professor Bergen McKee is friends with Leaphorn and is in the area collecting Navajo witchcraft stories while a fellow professor investigates the Anasazi ruins in the area. Leaphorn's case soon becomes connected to McKee's research. The book is told from the POV of both Leaphorn and McKee but McKee gets more time which is interesting because the series goes on to feature Leaphorn. The book was a bit slow to start of

Dated - thanks, 1970 - but the pacing of the story holds up enough to get through the cheesy tropes. I really like the way Hillerman weaves in native culture, but the story was too "thrilling" for me to handle. That's a personal problem. I wish I could read more in the series, but I'm clearly too amped up from daily life to enjoy mystery thrillers right now. But y'all have fun. I'll be over here doing yoga and reading Miss Marple.
