This book really surprised me - I was expecting it to be very run-of-the-mill and merely entertaining, but instead I found myself completely drawn in and wanting to spend more and more time with the characters in the book. I can't wait to see what else Ms Stockett writes.
Every 10th book or so, I like to read one that "everyone" is talking about - you know, something I wouldn't be ashamed to be seen reading! I wasn't really expecting much from this one, but I figured I'd try it out. At first, I w ...more

I'm usually turned off by books that receive a lot of hype, but this was a wonderful book. There were some nights where I was so stressed out reading it, even though it's not a mystery or suspense novel, the uncertainty and social anxiety was infectious. I'm looking forward to watching the movie although the girl cast as Skeeter is way too precious -- I was thinking more of a young Jodie Foster with crazy curly red hair. :)

Amazing! Truly a wonderful book to read and so hard to put it down that I've been up til 1am the past four evenings reading it. Great characters, great storyline, and it leaves you feeling hopeful for humanity without glossing over reality. I am now anxious to read more books about the south and am curious how this story could be retold in modern times from the perspective of the immigrant culture in America and Europe doing such jobs today. Highly recommended.

Mixed feelings about this one. I know the so-called 'dialect' used for the African American female voices in the book has generated a lot of controversy, but what I found more objectionable was the lack of an engaging plot. The characters were mainly cut-outs/types, and you could see where most of them were going to 'end up', so to speak. I found the 400+ pages rather hard-going for what is meant to be a mainstream bestseller - it was just hard to remain interested.

I loved this book. The characters were so real--I wanted to read more after the book was done. I would love it if the author continued to write more on each character's life after the book--or even before it! This is a must read. It gives such a great perspective to that part of our country's culture and history.

This book is truly wonderful! I enjoyed every second of reading it. It is very interesting to see what the '60s were like in the American south. The character development is so wonderful, I can vividly imagine every one of these women. The only thing that bothered me about the book is how it was written how the southern women speak. Definitely worth a read!
