What Members Thought
One of those books where I with I could be at 4.5 stars. If I had been doing reviews right after I finished the book, it probably would have been a five. Clear why it won the Pulitzer. This is a great novel. I think the title kept me away from it, partly because I thought it was going to be more magical realism, rather than Eugenides doing for Detroit, what Bellow did for Chicago and Roth did for Newark.
This book restored my faith in the Pulitzer (which I had lost after trying to read The Shipping News a year ago). The writing is such that I could not read it on the train unless I knew my trip was going to be at least 30 minutes long. I'd just lose track of everything around me entirely and miss my stop, guaranteed. Eugenides gives everything he writes such astounding depth... I loved this book and particularly the author's writing style. It was a book which made all five of my senses come alive.
