Temele cărții pe care Barnes le abordează sunt iubirea, familia, prietenia și mai ales, destinul uman. Titlul este o metaforă sugestivă care are legătură cu ideile și viața personajului masculin principal, Tony Webster. Este o carte destul de complexă și eu nu am citit-o atât de rapid pe cât aș fi vrut deoarece are idei pe care trebuie să le analizezi la modul profund. This is the kind of book that you'd like to read in one sitting, just to find out what's going on and where it takes you; but at the end of the day, after you finish the last page and close the book, you just don't know what to think of it.
