This guy can write. No wonder he won a Pulitzer for his reporting. I felt like this book was more a written apology to his mother as opposed to an actual memoir, and sometimes I tired of his "I'm just dumb Southern country boy and proud of it" routine, but that's OK. It's a good read.

I don't know, something about North Alabama boys breaks my heart worse than anybody else. But this was beautiful in all its sadness and joy.
